Oil Spill RecoveryOil spill recovery from solid surfaces (floor, land, roads, etc.) and water require different approaches and is accom-plished by different technique. Though oil recovery from solid surfaces may require prior oil con-tainment, spreading of the spilled oil on such surfaces happen relatively slow, and removal oil from floor, land, roads, etc. may be commenced without containment of the spilled oil.
Temporary storage of the recovered oil and its transportation is an integral part of oil spill cleanup process. Since recovered oil usually contains big amounts of water and debris, pretty large intermediate storage space is required.
There are many situations in oil spill cleanup where oil dispersing is the most viable, time- and cost-saving option. Dispersants are the liquids, which “disperse” oil in the water column. The dispersed oil is gradually consumed by micro-organisms in ocean. The main working component of dispersants is the surfactant (from which soaps and detergents are made up).
