• There are many situations in oil spill cleanup where oil dispersing is the most viable, time- and cost-saving option. Dispersants are the liquids, which “disperse” oil in the water column. The dispersed oil is gradually consumed by micro-organisms in ocean. The main working component of dispersants is the surfactant (from which soaps and detergents are made up). The surfactants reduce interfacial tension between oil and water, and cause the oil slick to break into small droplets dispersed in water column. Nowadays dispersants unlike their predecessors used in the late 1960s and early 1970s developed with due regard to safety of cleanup workers and to minimum negative effect to marine environment. In case of large oil spill cleanup operations dispersants are sprayed from small or large air crafts and helicopters. Spraying from boats helps in applying more correct dispersants amount, more precisely and facilitates mixing of the dispersant in water. Manual spraying of the dispersants is used mostly on land in case of relatively small oil spills.
